John Atkinson, left front row, was East Bierley's scorer when they won the National Village Championship at Lord's

East Bierley are mourning their long-serving scorer John Atkinson who died today aged 60 after a long fight against cancer.

Atkinson was a regular figure in the scorebox at grounds around the Bradford League over a 40-year period and he also served as club steward.

The highlights of his time with East Bierley were scoring at Lord's when they won the National Village Championship in 1979 and recording their hat-trick of Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup wins in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

In 2010 he was one of three scorers chosen by the league to trial laptop scoring, a challenge he enjoyed and tackled with enthusiasm,

East Bierley are seeking permission to hold a minute's silence before their Sovereign Health Care Priestley Cup final against Pudsey St Lawrence on Sunday.

East Bierley official Ray Davis said: "John did a lot for our club and our thoughts are with his family at this time. He will be sorely missed."
